TCMFF 2022 Picks & Plans: TCM Host Eddie Muller

Classic Couple recently asked TCM host Eddie Muller what he’s most looking forward to during the TCM Classic Film Festival April 21-24, 2022. Here are Eddie’s TCMFF picks and plans.

Classic Couple: What films/events are you personally looking forward to experiencing at the 2022 TCM Film Festival and why?

TCM Host Eddie Muller

Eddie Muller: Looks like I’ll be very busy at our first post-pandemic festival. I’m excited about lots of events on this program, but I’ll try to rein myself in.

I’ve been eager to show the 1942 B-movie Fly-By-Nigh(Sunday, 12:15pm) to TCM audiences ever since I discovered the film more than ten years ago. Because of rights issues I haven’t been able to program it on TCM, so I’m treating this show like a live edition of Noir Alley. I know people will love this film, directed by Robert Siodmak before he made the move to A pictures.

I’m also excited that another favorite of mine has been included (after many nudges), and that’s the midnight show on Friday night of Miracle Mile (1988). I’ll introduce it with its writer-director Steve De Jarnatt, and I’m hoping it’s a brand new discovery for most of the audience, as it’s sure to blow them away.

And I’m also thrilled to pay tribute to Doris Day by introducing 1957’s The Pajama Game (Friday, 3:30pm) and then moderate a discussion about Ms. Day with a group of her closest friends. I wrote an essay on her for a new book celebrating her 100th birthday, and it’ll be making its debut at the festival, which is really special. It’s all great, but those events I’m really anticipating.

Classic Couple Recommends

Eddie Muller will lead a discussion of The Pajama Game (1957) on Friday, April 22 airing from 3:30-5:30 pm at the Chinese Multiplex House 1. That same night, heading into Saturday, he’ll lead a discussion of Miracle Mile (1988) at a midnight airing from 12:00-1:45 am at the Chinese Multiplex House 6. Eddie Muller will also lead a discussion of Fly-By-Night (1942) airing from 12:15-1:45 pm on Sunday, April 24 at the Chinese Multiplex House 4. Check out the Doris Day book signing event (Doris Day: Images of a Hollywood Icon), for which Eddie is a contributor, on Friday, April 22 from 7:00-8:00 pm in the lobby of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.
