Official Site Stuff

Data we collect, why we collect it, and doing the right thing.

Comments, be nice

We love nice people who love classic movies. We loathe spammers, especially those that use commenting for their own promotions. For that reason, all comments on Classic Couple are reviewed by site administrators prior to posting. Note that your comment will be held in a queue until approved, so we ask for your patience in this era of instant everything. We encourage site visitors to engage in positive discussion about classic movies via the comments. We welcome this dialogue with you and thank you for engaging with our content.

And now some technical, behind-the-scenes stuff.

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection. We try to reply to all comments left on this site. We don’t, however, share site visitor information with third parties, and we don’t contact you unless you give us your advance permission.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see, if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

One more thing. Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service. Because, we loathe spam.

Media, rights are rights

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

As we publish about film history on the site, we use a variety of images and content that may be subject to copyright. We acknowledge the rights of the originators of this media and make no claim to represent it as our own.

The art of the artists – performers and filmmakers alike – covered in our content and our course materials is their art alone. It is not our intention to infringe on the copyright of any artist. We seek only to share their work with others and contribute to their legacies.

Smart people’s content

There are so many smart people out there, everywhere, who know a lot about classic film and movie-making. These smart people generously provide content about many of the subjects we cover here at Classic Couple. These scholars write books, manage websites, compile resources, produce videos, edit media, and generally share content about the things we love with the world.

We acknowledge the tremendous contributions others have made and continue to make to the world’s knowledge about classic film, film history and movie-making. When we can, we do our best to let you know who these geniuses are and how you can access their materials. But, as we ourselves make no claim to genius, we might miss this from time to time. Do know that we absolutely acknowledge the rights of the originators of this content and make no claim to represent it as our own.

History is a study of past events, reported on by people who thoughtfully record the who, what, when, where and why of things. Film history is no exception. We profusely thank all who contribute to the collective knowledge of classic film, movie-making and film history without whom Classic Couple could not exist.

Other people’s stuff

Posts on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

We are not unique in this practice, but want you to understand that the World Wide Web is interconnected. It’s a web, after all.

One more thing: This site recommends a variety of products in its shops and boutiques. We earn commission from qualifying purchases.

And another thing: We might let other folks advertise their products and services on our site. This does not imply our endorsement of an outside business, its offerings, their people or the polices and manner by which they conduct their business. What’s theirs is theirs and what’s ours is ours, and we like to keep it that way. If an issue arises that you wish to address with a third-party represented on our site, contact them directly for assistance. To be frank, we don’t assume any liability for the actions of others and won’t be able to help you, as nice as we aim to be.

Your stuff

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information you provide in your user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes. Ask us and please be a little patient; we will get you your stuff. Promise.

Access

We try to make reasonable accommodations so that all of our course or online learning participants have an enjoyable experience. Those who benefit from reading text to support their learning can access a script of our course narration by clicking the SCRIPT tab available in the MENU.

Time, never enough of it

As a virtual experience, Classic Couple is available to visitors 24/7. That said, the Classic Couple is located on the East Coast of the United States. Times listed on the site, especially airing schedules, reflect Eastern Time unless otherwise indicated.

And speaking of time, we do our best to respond to inquiries in a timely manner. But, we do need to sleep, watch classic, documentary and short films and generally attend to life’s demands, so we ask for your patience in awaiting a reply. Remember where we started in our request that we all be nice.
